Well... Assuming you can count twice per second, that's 120 times per minute, 7200 per hour, 172800 per day... now take a billion and divide by 172800 and you get 5787 days (+ a couple hours), meaning about 16 years, counting non-stop, at the same speed, without any pause.
Dad would've died within the first few days from hunger and thirst anyway...
1 billion seconds is approximately 33 years!
1000 000 seconds = (1 000 000/3600) hours = 277 hours.
277 hours/24 = approcimately 11 days and some hours.

Add 3 zeroes, actually. A billion is 1000 millions. so 1 000 000 000.
